One of the best things about being a CrossFit athlete is that you can walk into almost any box in the world, introduce yourself, and work out with a community that speaks the same language. Dropping in is a CrossFit tradition — but there are some unwritten rules that make the experience better for everyone.
What Is a Drop-In?
A drop-in is when you visit a CrossFit gym that isn't your home box, typically as a traveler or when you're trying out a new gym. Most CrossFit affiliates welcome drop-ins — it's a courtesy extended across the global CrossFit community.
How Much Does a Drop-In Cost?
Drop-in fees typically range from $15 to $35 per class, with the average around $20-25. Some gyms offer a free first class. A few gyms, especially in high-cost cities, charge up to $40-50. Always check the gym's website or call ahead — prices vary significantly.
Some gyms offer reciprocal drop-ins for athletes who are members at other affiliates, meaning they waive or reduce the fee. Worth asking about when you call.
Tip: Always contact the gym 24-48 hours ahead. Walk-ins are usually fine, but calling ahead lets the coach prepare and ensures there's space in the class. It's also just good manners.
Drop-In Etiquette
✓ DO
- Introduce yourself to the coach first
- Mention your experience level honestly
- Ask before using personal equipment
- Clean up everything you use
- Cheer for other athletes during the WOD
- Say thank you to the coach after class
- Follow the class structure — don't do your own thing
✗ DON'T
- Show up without contacting them first
- Brag about your home gym's programming
- Ignore the coach's scaling suggestions
- Leave without paying if there's a fee
- Monopolize equipment during warmup
- Compare everything unfavorably to your box
What to Expect
Before class
Check in with the front desk or coach, pay your drop-in fee, and introduce yourself. A good coach will ask about your experience level and any injuries. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to get familiar with the space and equipment layout.
During class
Every box has slightly different coaching cues, programming style, and class culture — but the structure is almost always the same: warmup, strength or skill work, WOD, cool down. Follow the coach's lead even if it's different from what you're used to at home.
The WOD
Scale appropriately. Don't let ego make you go Rx when you should scale — you're a guest, and blowing yourself up in a stranger's gym is embarrassing for everyone. The community will respect you more for honest scaling than for struggling through a workout inappropriately.
