What Is This Workout Testing?
26.1 is a pure engine test. The pyramid structure — building up and then mirroring back down — keeps you honest about pacing. Wall-ball shots tax your legs and lungs simultaneously, and the box jump-overs force hip extension under fatigue. The medicine-ball box step-overs in the middle are the real trap: they sound easier, but carrying the ball while stepping adds a grip and shoulder endurance element most athletes underestimate.
Strategy Tips
- Don't sprint the 20s. The early sets feel easy — that's the trap. Athletes who go unbroken on the opening sets often blow up on the 66 rep block.
- Break the 66 early. Sets of 15-16 with short breaks beat grinding through a 30-rep set that forces a minute-long rest.
- Use the box jump-overs as active recovery. Find a steady rhythm — don't rush them, don't slow-walk them either.
- Med-ball box step-overs: hug the ball close. Keep it tight to your chest to reduce shoulder fatigue, and step deliberately rather than jumping with the ball.
- The time cap is 12 minutes — most athletes won't finish Rx. Getting to the 66 wall balls and through them is the goal for the majority of competitors.

Workout 26.3
26.3 drops Thursday, March 12 — the final workout of the 2026 Open. Check back here for the full breakdown.
How the Open Works
Each workout is announced live on Thursday evening. Athletes have from Thursday through Monday to complete it and submit a verified score. You need a judge — either a coach at a CrossFit affiliate or another athlete following the movement standards.
Workouts have three divisions: Rx'd (prescribed loads and movements), Scaled (reduced loads and movement modifications), and Foundations (introduced in recent years for complete beginners). Your score counts on the global leaderboard within your division.
The Qualification Pathway
For athletes chasing the CrossFit Games, the Open is step one of four:
- CrossFit Open (Feb 26 – March 16) — everyone competes
- CrossFit Quarterfinals (March 26-30) — top Open finishers
- CrossFit Semifinals (April–June) — in-person events worldwide
- CrossFit Games (July) — the final stage
For most athletes, the Open is where the competition ends — and that's the point. Competing against your community and your past scores is the whole experience.
How to Register
Register at games.crossfit.com. Registration is $20 and gives you access to all three workouts, score tracking, and your global leaderboard ranking. You can register any time during the Open — even after the first workout drops.
Friday Night Lights: Most CrossFit gyms host community Open sessions on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings where everyone does the workout together and judges each other. If you're doing the Open for the first time, this is the experience to seek out — it's one of the best things in fitness.
